Rebecca Hogue and Ryder

On June 9th, 2022, A&E aired a new episode of ‘Accused: Guilty or Innocent’ featuring HCH’s own Andrew Casey and his pro bono representation of Rebecca Hogue

In April of 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, Hendrick, Casey, & Hutter’s own Andrew Casey met with and accepted a pro bono assignment for representing a woman that the State of Oklahoma planned to charge with first degree murder for a killing despite knowing that she did not ever physically harm the child. Four months before, Rebecca’s son, Ryder, was murdered at the hands of another man while she was at work.

In June and July of 2020, the State of Oklahoma disregarded the advice of lead detectives on the case and sought a confidential grand jury indictment against Rebecca Hogue for the killing committed by Rebecca’s boyfriend, Christopher Trent.

The case led to a two-week jury trial in Cleveland County, OK. The lead up and aftermath of trial were covered by A&E in the third season of “Accused: Guilty or Innocent.” The HCH team took no pay for their work while also funding experts and consultants for the trial out of their own pocket.

Despite not getting an acquittal at jury trial, Hogue’s pro bono attorneys—along with powerful testimony from numerous witnesses and experts—pursued and obtained a sixteen (16) month jail sentence that saved Rebecca from an unjust life sentence in Oklahoma prisons. The tragic case received national and international attention due to the tragic, unjust, and unusual facts.

In addition, HCH is hoping that the unique circumstances of the case will spur changes in laws that can empower future abuse victims in avoiding similar tragedies as well as change Oklahoma’s draconian laws regarding “failure to protect”: https://www.normantranscript.com/news/hogue-attorney-more-domestic-abuse-education-needed-in-oklahoma/article_a1f87ede-dbb1-11ec-b98d-53c803efd958.html https://www.normantranscript.com/opinion/editorial-prosecuting-hogue-a-misuse-of-failure-to-protect/article_72761bdc-399d-11ec-b62a-93fb95d5d87d.html
